A love of handmade

The Hive is for anyone who shares a love of handmade. Whether you’re someone who already makes, someone who wants to make but doesn’t know where to start, or someone who loves handmade but doesn’t have the time to create - The Hive is for you.

The Hive is a friendly, independent craft shop offering supplies and kits for knitting, crocheting, macramé, cross-stitch, embroidery, felting and punch needle. We sell both online and in-store from our South Wales shop. Our Risca shop is a welcoming space full of colour and with plenty of room for craft mornings and workshops. The shop offers something for all kinds of makers - a place to meet people at our craft mornings, supplies for the seasoned maker, or lessons and workshops for someone wanting to try something new. And for those that don’t want to make their own, we have a small range of ready-made items for sale, as well as some that can be made to order.

A little bit about me…

I’ve always enjoyed making and learning new crafts and skills. I taught myself to crochet after having children and also learnt to knit when I was a child. I find the more creative side of life so much more fulfilling than the office job I used to have and wanted to find a way to share my love of handmade while being able to support my family.

I set up my first crafty business in Oct 2018 – The Bumblebee Makery - making crochet items to sell, but my dream was to have a craft shop selling supplies. In November 2020, my sister and I set up The Hive together as an online enterprise arranging online craft fairs and designing craft boxes to sell until we were in the position to open a shop. My sister decided to focus on her own work and so now I run The Hive on my own.

I enjoyed the extra time I had with my family while working from home during lockdown and I didn’t want to return to long commutes. I left the financial services industry in August 2020 after approximately 20 years in order to find a more enjoyable way of making a living while being able to see more of my girls. I was lucky enough to find some space only four miles from home meaning that finally, I could open a shop.
