WORKSHOP TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided at all workshops. Please let me know in advance if you have any allergies or intolerances.
Participants can also enjoy a 10% discount on all purchases made from The Hive during the workshop. Please note this does not apply to future workshop bookings, coach trips, Melanie Made Mud, Seren Willow or Springer and Manx products.
Full payment must be made at the time of booking your workshop in order to secure your space. This payment is non-refundable, unless you give at least ten days’ notice AND we can fill your space. However, if The Hive cancels your booking for any reason, then all monies paid will be returned in full.
If there is a workshop that you would really like to attend, but can’t manage a full payment upfront, then please contact The Hive directly (in confidence) and we will be happy to try and work something out wherever possible. Please note, this will be at the discretion of the management.

Bookbinding: concertina book
£20 per person
Kate, of Kate’s Keepsake Books and Creative Bindery, is back after the success of her Bookbinding for Beginners workshops. This time, she will show you how to make a concertina book.
The cost is £20 per person and includes all materials as well as light refreshments. Participants will also receive a 10% off any purchases made at The Hive on the day of your workshop. (Please note that this cannot be used in conjunction with other offers.)

Origami Flowers
We are very excited to announce a new workshop at The Hive! Origami!
Tutor, Eunice Bell, will show you how to use this ancient technique of paper folding to produce a small posy of flowers to take home with you.
The cost is £24 per person, and as with all of our workshops, it includes all materials and light refreshments. You'll also get a 10% discount on any purchases made at The Hive on the day of your workshop. (Please note that this discount cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer.)
The workshop is being held between 1.30pm and 3.30pm on Saturday 15th June at The Hive, inside Time Counselling and Wellbeing Centre, 66 - 67 Tredegar Street, Risca. NP11 6BW.

Macramé Jewellery Mini Workshop
Friday, 14th June / 5.30pm - 6.30pm(ish) /£12 per person
This short workshop will be a perfect way to wind down on a Friday evening - you’ll get to meet like minded people, enjoy a chat over a cuppa and biscuits and make a beautiful necklace to take home with you. Hopefully, it will leave you feeling inspired and wanting to make more - they make impressive gifts!
The workshop will cost £12 per person and will include all materials required to make one necklace as well as light refreshments.
Needle Felted Buttons
Join us on Saturday, 20th April from 1.30pm to make needle felted buttons. You will be guided through the whole process by Amy, our resident needle felter, to make the perfect finishing touches for your handmade goodies.
The cost is £22 per person and this includes all materials and light refreshments. You will need to book in advance and pay for your space at the time of booking. In the event of cancellation, fees are not refundable unless we are able to fill your spot.
Loom Weaving
Amy Hodson of Weave Love Amy is bringing her handmade looms back to The Hive for another beginners' weaving class. She is a great tutor - fun, friendly and knowledgeable. Join us to learn a new craft on Friday 8th March between 6pm and 9pm. Amy will take you through all the processes needed to make your own finished piece to take home. There will be plenty of tea, coffee, cake and biscuits in a relaxed atmosphere.

Willow Weaving with Seren Willow
Saturday, 3rd June 2023. 10am - 1pm.

Sarah Lart is back with another of her popular workshops. This time, she will show us how to make a beautiful woven basket. She will bring a pre-made wooden base for you to weave on to and will guide you step by step through all the techniques, so you’ll end up with a fabulous piece to take home.
All materials will be provided, along with tea, coffee and biscuits.
Crochet baskets
£35 per person
Friday, 21st April 2023, 6pm - 9pm
This workshop is aimed at confident beginners, with a basic knowledge of crochet, and will be run by me, Nicola, of The Hive.
Learn how to make your own storage basket using a recycled braided cord, often used in macramé. You will receive a copy of the pattern to keep, as well as a crochet hook and a 100m spool of cord. This will be enough to make a basket on the night, with some left over, which you can take home with you.
As usual, all materials and light refreshments are included in the cost of this workshop.

Macramé Plant Pot Hanger Workshop
Friday 31st March 2023, 6pm - 8.30pm
£30 per person, inclusive of all materials and refreshments
Spend an evening learning knots and making a unique plant hanger. We will use braided macramé cord made from recycled cotton and polyester and there is a wide choice of colours for you to choose from. You will receive a knot guide to take home with you so you can continue to learn your new hobby.

Weaving with Amy

Christmas needle felting and mixed media workshop
Saturday, 26th November 2022. 9.30am - 1.30pm

Join experienced crafter and former teacher Fredericka to learn all the skills and techniques you will need to make your own beautiful Christmas angel. The head will be needle felted, while the body and dress will be made using a variety of media. Fredericka will take you through the whole process so you don’t need any prior experience.
All materials will be provided, including neutral coloured embellishments. However, if you have a colour scheme in mind for your angel, then please bring some of your own embellishments, eg, ribbon, lace, buttons, etc.
This promises to be a fun and varied workshop, so please book ahead to avoid disappointment.
Tea, coffee and biscuits are all included in the cost.

Glass Fusion Poppy Suncatcher with Melanie Made Mud

Friday 14th October 2022, 6pm - 9pm

Mell is back to show you how to make a poppy inspired sun catcher using the glass fusion method. You’ll learn how to cut bullseye glass to make a piece of glass art for Remembrance Day experimenting with various glass frits and stringers to create a natural floral poppy design.
Mell will fire your finished piece at her studio and will return it to The Hive for collection.
All materials, firing and refreshments are included in the cost of this popular workshop.
Plant Fibre Weaving with Seren Willow
Saturday 8th October 2022, 10am - 1pm
£28 per person (£14 non-refundable deposit)
Sarah is back to show us how to weave with plant fibres. The technique differs to willow weaving, but can be applied to lots of other materials. Weaving with plant fibre is much gentler on your hands than willow weaving and Sarah will guide you step by step through all the techniques and you’ll end up with a fabulous piece to take home with you.
If you are a gardener, you might like to bring some of your own, homegrown material with you. To do that, you will need to cut some long, slender leaves in advance and hang them in a bunch to dry. The night before the workshop, please wet them and wrap in a damp cloth overnight. Leaves such as monbretia, day lilies and irises work well. If you have nothing that will suit the project, then please don’t worry as Sarah will bring some with her.
All materials will be provided, along with tea, coffee and biscuits.
Glass fusion with Melanie Made Mud
Friday, 7th October 2022, 6.00pm - 9pm
£48 per person

Due to the popularity of the glass fusion workshops, Mell is hosting another. She will teach you all you need to know to make your own decorative glass piece. At the end of the evening she will take it back to her studio for firing before returning your work to The Hive for collection.

Throw your own pot with Melanie Made Mud
Saturday, 17 September 2022.
Child’s 30 minute session - £15 each.
Adult’s 45 minute session - £20 each.

Get ready to roll up your sleeves and have a go on the pottery wheel with Melanie Made Mud.
Drop in session slots available at The Hive on Saturday 17th September between 10am and 4pm. A child’s 30 minute session is £15 each and adults’ sessions are £20 for 45 minutes.
Melanie will guide you through the process of throwing your own pot. If there is time, you’ll be able to make a second. Once complete she will fire your pot and glaze it. A choice of glazes are available.
Please wear clothes that can get a bit mucky! Please note that children must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the session.

We will use macramé cord made from recycled cotton and there is a wide choice of colours for you to choose from. You will also receive a knot guide to take home with you.
FOR KIDS! Paint Your Own Pottery with Melanie Made Mud
Tuesday 30 August 2022. £12.50 per piece per person, or £22 for two pieces.
50% deposit required in advance.
Paint your own pottery piggy bank, coupe plate or mug!
Choose a piece of pottery, decide how you'll paint it or Melanie will guide you with some inspiration if you're stuck.
Sit and paint using our brushes and sponges.
Once finished your pottery will be taken away for firing and will have a clear shiny glaze applied and be ready for collection in a week. This will be a really fun workshop and we expect it to fill up quickly. Please book early.
All pieces are £12.50 each or £22 for two.

Tie dye workshop with Kaleidoscope Creations
This workshop is aimed at children, but grown-ups can book on too if they’d like!
Wednesday 24th August, 10.30am - approximately 12.00pm

All children must be accompanied by an adult throughout the session.
Tie dye is really popular at moment, so why not book your children on to this fun holiday activity? The workshop is run by Jess, who will guide the children through the process of tie dying a pair of socks and a t-shirt. There will be lots of colours to choose from and everyone will end up with useful items truly unique to them.
Please note that due to time constraints, you will need to do the final wash of the socks and pillow cases at home, but don’t worry - Jess will give you clear instructions.
Please confirm the particpant’s shoe size and t-shirt size when booking.

Cyanotype photography with Toby Van de Velde
Create Cyanotype Photographic Prints
Saturday, 16th July 2022, 2pm - 5pm

Price includes all materials and light refreshments.
Join professional photographer Toby and learn about cyanotype photography, a Victorian photographic process that needs minimal equipment requires no darkroom.
Toby will take you through the process and you will make three or four A6 images in the session. You’ll also be able to coat some more watercolour paper with cyanotype chemicals to take home and continue experimenting.
Please note that while cyanotype chemicals are not toxic, care should be taken and you will need to wear old clothes or an apron.

Please bring your own lunch as well as two old bath towels, a plastic bag to take the wet towels home in and a small plastic bowl or container.
